Great progress has been made in the field of the editing and publishing postgraduate education in China since 1998. Though the construction of the discipline has been gradually improved and qualified talents in this field were cultivated, it is still under a poor condition and has some problems to be solved.This thesis probes into the development of the editing and publishing postgraduate education in China and selectively introduces the situation of this major in some universities. With widely collected information, the author finds there's no clear orientation of the subjects and it is quite urgent to strengthen the system of the teaching mode and modernize the courses offered. The author hopes his research could be of help to the innovation of publishing in China and the development of the editing and publishing postgraduate education.The thesis is composed of seven parts.Part I A general introduction to the editing and publishing postgraduate education in ChinaThe Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council officially approved enrollment of Journalism and Communication postgraduates in Beijing Institate of Graphic Communication and the Arts College of Henan University in 1998, specializing in the research fields of editing and publishing, etc. And till 2007, there are more than 40 universities enrolling postgraduate in this field. This part of the thesis makes an overall review on the start and the development of postgraduate education of editing and publishing and then introduces the universities which enrol postgraduates in this field. Part II An inquiry into the orientation of disciplineThe relationship between editing, publishing and communication and the feasibility of listing editing and publishing into the Catalogue of Subjects Awarding Degrees of Master and Doctor is studied in this part.Part EI Evaluation of the present curriculum settingCarrying out an investigation of present curriculums in some universities, this part is concerned with the setting of the main courses and the integrity of the courses.Part IV Construction of the teaching staffOn the basis of the survey of the present teaching staff of editing and publishing, the fourth part suggests hiring experts in the field to be adjunct professors so as to reinforce the faculty.Part V Teaching mode of the postgraduate educationSeminar is suggested to be a main teaching method and "academic salons " , lectures and meetings are considered to be important approaches to improve the postgraduate's academic capacity.Part VI An analysis of the sources of students and employment of the postgraduatesThis part discusses it is appropriate to enrol more working post graduate students and it will promote the stable development of publishing.Part VII Probing into the education mode of editing and publishing postgraduateThe last part draws a conclusion that joint-operated mode will effectively satisfy the educational need of editing and publishing major.
