A Study On Open Access Resources And Their Evaluation

This paper has analyzed eight open access resources, including four open access archives and four open access journals. Every resource has been analyzed by three aspects which include basic indexes,quality and search function. And then, four open access archives and four open access journals have been evaluated separately. The aim of this paper is to make readers have comprehensive and objective knowledge of open access resources and to guide readers how to use these open access resources. Meanwhile, this paper is used for reference of other open access resources'construction.The research method of this paper is quantitative analysis,qualitative analysis and comparative analysis.The four open access archives this paper has selected are arXiv,Institution Repository of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology,Cogprintså'ŒE-scholarship. The four open access journals this paper has selected are BioMed Central,High Wire Press,DOAJ and Open J-Gate. Every resource has been analyzed from three aspects which include basic indexes,quality and search function. And then, four open access archives and four open access journals have been evaluated separately and we can draw a conclusion: the evaluation rank of four open access archives, in degradated orders, is arXiv,E-scholarship,Cogprints,Institution Repository of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In the area of open access journals, BioMed Central is the best resources among specialized subject open access journals. The evaluation rank of the other three resources is High Wire Press,DOAJ and Open J-gate.The search function of open access archives is superior to open access journals and is worth referring by open access journals. Quality control and personalized services of open access journals are superior to open access archives and are worth referring by open access archives. Meanwhile, these four open access archives and four open access journals are leaders among open access resources, so, the construction of these resources could provide useful information for other open access resources to help them make up for their shortfalls.
