Gears are the essential spares of any plant equipment, their complicated shapes and varied features require many parameters, which makes it difficult to make precise measurements. The traditional contact methods are unsuitable to be used in the production processes since they take too much time and energy. The application of Machine Vision and Virtual Instruments cannot only achieve the precise and synchronous line measurements, but also it has the untouchable, visional, automatic and intelligent advantages.This thesis first studies the basic theories and features of the Machine Vision and Virtual instruments; on this basis, makes the best of the powerful development functions of the Virtual Instruments-LabVIEW and its external tool bag IMAQ Vision to put the basic geometric parameter measurement system of the involute spur gear into practice; and then, uses the collection and playback methods to achieve the basic line measure of the top gear pictures, root gear pictures and modulus of the involute spur gear so as to calculate the results of public normal to monitor the deviations during the gears production processes. During the development of the system, this thesis probes into the morphology and filtering methods to process the gray scale pictures of the gears so as to provide the better quality pictures for the geometric parameter measurements.It saves a lot of money to develop software systems to get gear parameters than to buy the hardware equipment. Furthermore the software is easy to use. Although this system can only accomplish simple geometric parameter measurements of the involute spur gears and the parameters got are not precisely enough to meet the accurate demand in the industrial production of the gears, it provides the meaningful explosion of the usage and development of the Machine Vision and Virtual Instruments technology in the measure process of the gears.
