Assembly design is an important link in the product development. It can affect the product in many ways, including its cost, quality and time to market. Virtual assembly is an important part of virtual manufacturing technique, attracts concerns from both academic and industrial fields. Through building models of the product to simulate and analyse the assembly process, can find the assembly defaults as early as possible, shorten the product's design period, reduce product's costs, and improve the product's commercial competitive ability. At the same time, through virtual assembly operation training, increase techno-operators'understanding about practical assembly, get all-sided information about assemblies in time, with assembly knowledge, quickly, comprehensively, safely complete the assembly task.Along with the Web technology development, which takes network programming language VRML as the core, virtual product technology based on the VRML gets more and more regards. In mechanical engineering field, VRML is used for the implementation of the virtual assembly of mechanical products, simulating the assembly, the disassembly process widely. The viewers only need to operate the browser to carry on the multiple perspectives, omni-directional observation of the process. It has the vital significance on product demonstration based on the Web and the workers and student's training on maintenance of equipments and so on.Through the analysis of virtual assembly generating background, concept, domestic and international studies, the paper researches on simulation of modular fixture virtual assembly based on VRML, and discusses the human-computer interactive mode in virtual environment, and makes researches on the key technologies about relative problems, platform structure, and implementation methods for Internet VRML-based virtual assembly, and so on.The main achievements and creative ideas of the dissertation are as follows:(1) The methods and processes of 3D product modeling in 3D max platform are discussed by analyzing 3D Mechanical product modeling and are applied to modeling of modular fixture. And the methods of how to use VRML build 3D visualization virtual assembly environments.(2) Concept of VRML, a 3D modeling language which is used on internet widely, is introduced. Several key techniques are studied, and suitable VRML Browser and Editor are selected.(3) The user interactive interface is developed with the Java Abstract Windows Toolkit (AWT), and a decision is made to use the EAI and Java Applet to realize its functions. Human-computer interaction is realized in virtual environment.(4) The colliding objects are established within VRML environment to realize the function of collision detection by the use of object-oriented method.(5) A Virtual Assembly System based VRML-Java in the network is constructed combined with the techniques of Data Base and Web.
