Virtual assembly technology is virtual reality's typical application in manufacture field, compared with traditional assembly technology, this technology can reduce cost, improve quality and efficiency, therefore virtual assembly technology becomes one of the most active research points in CAD/CAM fields.Based on the analysis of existing research achievements, the author designs a technical line of virtual assembly based on STEP, especially researches and implements three technical key-points: part model information pick-up, part model data transform and the evaluation of virtual assembly.The author adopts the method which based on STEP to implement the part model information pick-up, this method can keep down the topology information and establish good foundation for the follow-up technical points; VRML data generation based on the precision controllable part model surface triangulation, realized the reconstruction of part model in virtual environment; about the evaluation of virtual assembly, the author researches and implements the dynamic collision detection in the process of part model operate and exactitude interference detection on the result of assembly, at the same time, principium research and discuss of the optimized assembly result based on assembly semantic are present.Besides, a web-based virtual assembly prototypical system based on these research achievements is implemented in this paper, and several typical examples are given as well. The results of these examples indicate the correctness of the research achievement above.
