Assembly plays an important role in the modern manufacturing trade. Now it becomes the process which takes the longest of time and the most of manual work. In order to overcome the bottleneck and promote the production efficiency, we put forward the concept of virtual assembly based on the computer simulation and emulation, which integrates computer graphics, database technology, concurrent engineering, multimedia technology and virtual reality technology. As it needs to share the uniform modeling information in concurrent design, assembly & test, so we adopt the concept of virtual assembly system modeling (VASM). VASM means concurrently design the virtual assembly feature model in the construction of numeral assembly modeling process, including the information of assembly part dimension, assembly hierarchic arrangement, assembly structure, assembly route interference etc. For get above information, we using VC program language, UG/OPEN API interface to abstract & transfer the assembly model information, we also create a reconfigurable virtual assembly system part database to inquire & reconfigure the virtual assembly part. After the revision, we also can reassemble them in the UG by UG/OPEN API, VC DLL & VB program language. The above reconfigurable method is especially useful in large assembly: firstly, we can input all the standard series dimensions into the virtual assembly part database, then we inquire the corresponding series assembly part's appearance & specification and at last we input them to UG assembly, it's convenient for management & proved to be much practical. In the end, we give an application of combed-fixture.
