Assembly design is an important link in the product development. It can affect the product in many ways, including its cost, quality and time to market. To solve the assemble-ability of product design, the most efficient way is to simulate the real assembly and motion process in computer by means of interaction and visualization. Virtual reality technology is integrated application of computer animation technology, computer vision, artificial intelligence, multimedia technology, pattern recognition, automation and sensing technology. Immersion, interaction and imagination are three main characters of the virtual reality technology. The virtual assembly is emerged by applying the virtual reality technology to product assembly design. At the early stage in product design, virtual assemble technology studies the interrelated problems such as assemble-ability, time to market, cost, assembly sequence and path planning, thereby shorten the cycle of product design and improve the enterprise performance.After the analysis of virtual assembly generating background, concept, domestic and international studies, the paper expatiates on the relevant concept of virtual assembly and VRML, assembly simulation, collision detection, etc. and makes a further research on the relative problems of Internet VRML-based virtual assembly technology working on the simple PC as platform structure, implementation methods for virtual assembly and so on. The main studies are the following:(1) Analyzing the process of virtual assembly on PC, and the method of establishing 3D visualization virtual assembly scene.(2) Developing the platform interactive user interface with the Java Abstract Windows Toolkit (AWT), and introducing the method of using the EAI and Java Applet to realize its functions.(3) Establishing the colliding object within VRML environment to realize the function of collide-checked by the use of object-oriented method.
