In the equipment for produce sheet-board, sheet-steel and piece goods and so on, the edge position must to be in order. As the amelioration of techniques and equipment and the increase of set speed, the desire of machining is also higher year after year, but in the manufacture process, many environment disturbances may influent the condition of process and then induce the profile running deviation. The deviation of the strip may induce the edge of the sheet product out of order and even make the strip breaking. So we must detect the profile running deviation and control the edge in right position, so that adapt the fast speed of produce, make the strip running no fault and the strip coil in order. At the present, most of the edge detection equipments are from foreign language, mainly with the EMG Company in Germany and the BST Company in France. The domestic product is less in use because it's precision and stability remains to be improved.An edge detection method of moving strip was designed by means of the image gathering function of a linear array CCD. The hardware structure was effectively simplified with a parallel beam projector as an illuminating source, an AVR single-chip computer to drive the CCD and to dispose the detected results. The measurement circuit and the binarization principle of CCD output signals are introduced. The design plan of the hardware and software are also provided. The experiment shows that the measuring accuracy of this instrument is better than 0.03 mm, and the response time is fewer than 0.2 ms.
