With widely use of three dimensional CAD software, like Pro/ENGINEER,UG, CATIA, SolidWorks and so on, the method of design using three dimensional CAD has become a main design method. As the design method keeps improving, the process planning is also improving. How to design processes based on 3D-CAD has become one of the urgent problems required by many enterprises.Aimed at recently existing problems in the application of software Pro/ENGINEER such as the unique employment of CAD function, and rare of CAPP (Computer Aided Process Planning) function, a general method to develop the three dimensional CAPP under the environment of Pro/ENGINEER is proposed by using the secondary development software Pro/TOOLKIT in the system of Pro/ENGINEER in the paper.Based on analysis of the current status and problems of CAPP research, the overall structure of the system of three dimensional CAPP is proposed, and a detailed design scheme to build up various functional modules is also presented. Then three crucial technical problems about implementing the three dimensional CAPP are analyzed. The seamless integration between CAPP and Pro/ENGINEER is basically realized. The main research work includes following several:1) The overall structure of the system of three dimensional CAPP and a detailed design scheme of building up various functional modules are proposed.2) The three crucial technologies to realize the system of three dimensional CAPP are researched specially, which are the research of part feature recognition and extraction technology, the research of 3D parametric processes modeling technology and the research of database technology about three dimensional CAPP system.3) In this paper, with the Use of Pro/ TOOLKIT and MFC class library of VC++. NET, application of user's interface of CAPP system is developed. Moreover, the task to design three-dimensional model of process parts, to pick up the size of the model and to drive model using parameterized technology is also completed. 4) Automatically transferring card data of the process of design into editor, achieving the automatic generation of the processes diagram corresponding three-dimensional model of the process , and completing the printout of documentThe instance proves that the research is practical and feasible, and the three dimensional CAPP system which has been developed, is easy to operate and has very high value for practice.
