Embedded systems are playing an increasingly important role in industrial engineering. Despite their popularity, embedded systems are generally subject to resource constraints. It is therefore difficult to build complex control systems on embedded platforms. Furthermore, the design and implementation of embedded systems are traditionally separated, which makes the development of embedded systems highly timeconsuming and costly. To address these problems, this paper presents a low-cost, reusable, reconfigurable platform for integrated design and implementation of embedded control systems. To minimize the cost, free and open source software packages such as Linux and Scilab are used.This paper mainly includes:1. This part mainly deals with building embedded Linux development environment and porting the related packages into the embedded ARM platform. Firstly, a detailed description of how to use the Buildroot tool kits for building cross-compiler, as well as description of Minicom, TRTP, and other developing tools will be given. Then, the next part describes how to port embedded GUI TinyX and window manager JWM to ARM-Linux.2. This part describes building Scilab-EMB embedded computing platform. Firstly an introduction to numerical computing software -Scilab will be given, then description regarding to how to realize Scilab-EMB on the ARM platform.3. This part gives a general idea of developing Scilab-EMB-DAQ data acquisition toolbox, realizing communication between Scilab and hardware. Both PC and ARM version toolbox support serial and Ethernet interface and Modbus fieldbus. In addition, PC version supports OPC protocol.4. This part describes building virtual control laboratory based on Scilab and proves the feasibility and performance of this platform.The innovations of this paper are as follows:1. The paper, for the first time, proposed a brand-new Scilab-cored embedded platform and realized porting Scilab into ARM. 2. The research successfully developed Scilab-DAQ data acquisition toolbox, realizing efficient communication between Scilab and hardware.Through virtual lab, the capability for complex computing of this embedded computing platform is verified.This platform and the Scilab-DAQ data acquisition toolbox has attracted much attention from the counter partners' staff both at home and abroad, and adopted and applied by many research organizations, schools, enterprises, etc.
