The motorcar is the most important vehicle in the modem world, and it is also the symbolof modem civilization. The popularization of the motorcar has brought great convenience topeople's life. With the development of society and economy, vehicles with the positioning andremote monitoring system become very necessary because of the increment of traffic jamsand car theft. In the early 1990s, the technology of vehicle positioning and remote monitoringcame into existence, and mature products were introduced in 2000. But the products currentlyavailable in the market mostly used GPS & GSM technology to construct the system, and thisscheme has the problem of high cost, data delay and loss, which leads to the deterioration ofthe system's performance of real time and reliability.This paper adopts GPS&GPRS technology to construct the system, because it has thefeatures of low cost, high-speed transmission, short accessing time, IP protocol support and soon. In this paper, firstly the knowledge of the embedded system, GPS, GPRS and Linuxoperate system is researched. And the features of GPS and GPRS hardware modules areanalyzed, then the hardware environment which is based on fit2410 board is set up, and theboard is extended by plugging GPS and GPRS hardware modules into the serial ports.Secondly, Linux kernel 2.4.18 is cut and cross compiled, and it is loaded to the board, thus thesoftware platform of the system is built. Then comes the application development, after theanalysis of the GPS and GPRS data formats, as well as the related protocols, an appropriateoption is made firstly. And then the Linux kernel is programmed, the data of GPS module isread via serial port, the related data is handled, and it is transformed and displayed by GUI toshow the information of location, speed and so on. Finally, the format of data is designedaccording to the features of GPRS, and it is transmitted via SMS, phone or internet, in orderto implement the function of wireless communication. Thus, the goal of monitor and controlis achieved. A real-time and highly reliable vehicle positioning and remote monitoring system,which is based on GPS&GPRS, is built by research and test. And finally the goal is achieved.
