With the more development of embedded system and the more popularization of wireless communication technology, wireless multimedia terminals (WMT) (e.g. PDA, information home appliances), which are based on embedded systems as the platforms and depend on wireless data transmit technology, becomes the new trend of IT development.Embedded operation systems are the main purpose of current research. Today more embedded devices use Linux than Nucleus or VRTX, and it is gaining ground on Embedded Windows and pSOS. There are many features when using Linux as embedded operation system: stability, high performance, easy custom, wide hardware support, etc. Because of these features, embedded Linux grow up a black horse in the embedded system field.Today wireless communication technology is in the period from 2G to 3G. Through 3G is still not a standard for application, it will take the place of GSM in the future. Nowadays GPRS is the transitional solution form 2G to 3G. GPRS service allows the wireless network provides more high speed to access Internet or other packet networks (X.25 …).In this paper, we first present the base knowledge of GSM/GPRS wireless protocols and introduce the wireless hardware working method. After that, we take a look at the communication between GSM/GPRS wireless hardware and WMT system board. At last, we give out the classic application and expect goals of the hardware device.Based on the previous introduction and information, we focus on the design of GSM/GPRS driver and application system. Through analyzing the characteristics of embedded Linux and the requirements of WMT, we give out a feasible design scheme for GSM/GPRS application system based on embedded Linux. It has good compatibility, good extensibility and good transplanty.At the end of the paper, we present the implementation and testing of every module of the whole system in details.
