Many virtual 3D battlefield environment applications require the visualization of meteorological information, thus we study the characteristics of meteorological data and models with various level and type. Focusing on the management technology of these data and models, we present a new method of integrative visualization based on basic theories in VR and 3D Visualization. The presented method which integrated with 3D terrain data can give users a deeper impression of the changes in those meteorological factors above different terrains with different levels, and a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of the meteorological and geographic circumstances in concerned districts as well.The main contribution and creation are as follows:1. The issue of how to manage meteorological data and models is discussed; and the problems of the diversity in the visualization process of meteorological factors with different types and scales are solved. A synthesized prototype to visualize all the meteorological information is implemented, which has solved the efficiency problem encountered in the visualization of the large scale meteorological information, through pre-scheduling strategy and optimized catalog technology of data and models.2. A texture synthesis based on samples technology of rainy scene simulation is studied, and we propose a parameters adjustable texture synthesis method which takes into account of characters of rains in nature. Different rainy scenes caused by different wind velocities or rain velocities can be rendered by easily changing the raindrop textures.3. The technology of 3D cloud modeling and rendering is studied, and an automatic/semiautomatic "Cloud Carve" technique is introduced into the modeling step. The blurry and volumetric effects are added to cloud rendering procedure, together result in a rather realistic look.4. After the implementation and integration of above algorithms, a prototype system of the meteorology information visualization in global framework is designed and set up. The visualized meteorological factors include cloud, wind, rain, snow, lightning and so on. Our system not only promises validity and rationality in visualization of meteorology information but also meets the real time demand.
