In recent years, based on the develop of computer science, communication and networking, multimedia information which integrated audio, video, images, texts and data, has facilitated more and more people by bringing the joys of cyber-life,tele-medical and telecommunications, which shortened the distance over time and space. Among this, digital TV(including HDTV), compressing and storage of DVDs,video conference and 3G is the focus of research and one of the trend of multimedia technologies.H.264/AVC is a new generation video compression standard. Using the mature technique, it has much higher compression efficient and more concise expression forms than other standards, meanwhile provides very good video quality, which make it as the most efficient video compression method. Compared with the other video coding method, H.264/AVC has much more broad prospect. We can expect that it will be broadly used in all fields of video industry.For minimum cost in move equipment on realizing multi-media technology, we should transplant H. 264/AVC software decoder to embedded system. As the functions of embedded system become much stronger and more complicated than before, using a kind of Operation System becomes a necessary choice. Because of its free of charge, high reliability, with the whole source code attached and strong network functions etc, Embedded Linux Operation System gradually becomes the focus of every person, which has been used in various embedded products.This paper firstly introduces video coding principle, Describes the process of H.264/AVC standard, introduces some kinds of crucial technologies in H.264/AVC. Then, builds embedded development environment, transplants H. 264/AVC software decoder to embedded equipment and evaluate its performance. After discovering the insufficient places of performance, carries out the optimization. Finally, introduces the method which show the decoded video on LCD.
