Virtual reality came into being at the end of 20th century, resulting from the comprehensive application of information technology, integrating digital transformation of graphics, multimedia technology, and the transition of digital data, etc., thus fundamentally pushing forward the development of computer technology.Virtual reality is a science that connects human being with information. The core of it is formed by some environments generated by some digital data that can be decoded into three-dimensional pictures. These environments may come from reality, but they may also be imaginary models of the real world. The purpose of creating virtual reality is to convey information through some man-made experience. With virtual reality technology, the formation of much complicated or abstract concept system becomes possible by translating some parts of the system into symbols with definite meanings. Virtual reality takes up a great deal of human elements, and it magnifies some effects on human senses. It is based on many subjects such as psychology, control system, computerized graphics, data base design, synchronized configuration, electronics, robot technology, and multimedia technology.Presently the information on the internet is mainly two-dimensional, but the wide application of three-dimensional information conveyance is the trend for the development of the internet. As the Web language that comes after HTML, VRML appeared in the 1990s. In the first www conference opened in Geneva, March 1994, VRML was born as a term. VRML system supports texture mapping, panorama and background design, fog design, video and audio construction, movement of objects, and testing of coalition-----all the things needed for making a virtual reality world.In 1998, VRML Organization changed its name into Web3D Organization and at the same time made a new standard, Extensible 3D (X3D). In the spring of 2000, Web3D Organization finished the transition from VRML to X3D, which integrate the developing technologies of XML, JAVA, flow technology and other advanced technologies, thus possessing greater and more efficient 3D computerizing capability, realizing quality, and transfer speed.This paper starts with the basic theory of virtual reality to explore ways to make 3D virtual reality objects on the Internet. The main point of this paper is the exploration of the ways to use Java and VRML means to make virtual reality objects in the virtual reality campus of the Changchun University.It introduces the basic methods in using the 3D model construction software 3DS MAX to construct models, and then studies how to use the powerful model construction and output function of this software to build complicated 3D scenes and transform these scenes into data with wrl format.This thesis also explains the basic concept of the 3D model construction language VRML and the basic principles in making a virtual reality, and how to make simple 3D models with VRML.Centered on the study of the design of the virtual reality campus of Changchun University, this thesis includes the following parts:1. The first chapter introduces the concept, characteristic, and basic elements of virtual reality, analyzing the present condition of the world's research into virtual reality technology and putting forward the background for writing this thesis and its significance.2. The second chapter deals with the difference between cartooning and the virtual reality system, and gives an overall design of the virtual campus of Changchun University, its 3D model construction parts, and the cruising system.3. The construction work of the cruising system lies mainly in the construction of 3D models; the quality of these models decides the quality of the whole virtual reality system. The third chapter works out a solution for model construction with the combination of 3DS MAX and VRML technologies. So this thesis discovers much convenience in constructing a virtual reality by using the powerful model construction and output function of 3DS MAX to build complicated 3D models and transform 3D scenes and models into data with wrl format. For the simple models, VRML is used to make them; in this way the data of all the virtual scenes are kept small. The front gate of Changchun University is taken as an example for 3D model construction.4. Chapter four designs the actual realization process for building the virtual campus, putting forward a campus cruising system based on VRML and Java, studying some critical techniques in building the system, and finishing the design of the virtual campus of Changchun University. 5. The last part makes a conclusion of the thesis and gives some expectations of future works.
