Abstract/Summary:
This study has examined the growth and development of the University Libraries at SUNY at Buffalo during the first two decades since September 1962 when the University of Buffalo merged with the State University of New York. It investigated the impact that merging had on the University library system by analyzing the administration of the University Libraries, the development of the Libraries' collection and services, the application of information technology, the construction of the library buildings, and the administrative and financial support accorded the Libraries.; Information for this study was mainly obtained from primary sources and selected secondary sources available in the University Archives at the SUNY at Buffalo and elsewhere. Interviews were conducted to obtain personal views and insights to supplement the available written sources. Historical research method was employed to trace causes and deduce from the available data the factors which were responsible for the development of the University Libraries.; It was concluded that the inspiration of the University administration and faculty to build the University into a leading research institution in the nation, and the faculty and students' agitation for needed library services and materials were instrumental in putting SUNY at Buffalo on the progressive, modern path of library development. The other factors that contributed to the development of a modern research library system at SUNY at Buffalo were dedication and hard work of administrators and library staff, and adequate financial support. While these factors were important in the development of a modern research library system at SUNY at Buffalo, they can serve as the following useful guides to those who wish to build a superior institution: recognizing necessary library services, making a commitment to develop such services to help fulfill the mission of the University, building up a determined and dedicated team of professional library staff to deliver quality services, and securing at least adequate financial support to achieve those goals.
