Streaming media is the main application of the Next Generation Internet (NGI), but it is characterized of real time and mass of data. In order to improve efficiency and QoS of transmission, new architecture and protocol are demanded pressingly. The paper briefly outlines the basic knowledge of streaming media, and then research focuses on streaming media transmission technology. With regard to transmission efficiency, multicast technology has been studied; meanwhile shortcomings of IP Multicast and the advantages of the Application Layer Multicast (ALM) have been pointed out. Then the paper lays a strong emphasis on the study of ALM. Establishment of multicast routing tree and management of multicast members, which are ALM's two key technologies, have been studied in-depth. As to transmission quality, the network QoS and multicast QoS have been surveyed, the former mainly conducts the different label-mapping for classified IPv6 address by means of MPLS technology, the latter mainly studies on QoS in terms of the network architecture of multicast. On the basis of above research, a streaming media system was designed, which makes use of ALM for delivery of streaming media and ensures transmission quality with QoS technologies. In the design, ALM system adopts the server-based architecture, meanwhile the concept of QoS domain is introduced, and then architecture of ALM with QoS domain was described in detail. The so-called QoS domain refers to all servers which were made up of an ALM routing tree within the same QoS level. Architecture of ALM with QoS domain includes a service gateway, multicast server and multicast client. As a result of QoS domain, QoS can be integrated into Architecture of ALM easily. The paper also makes use of IPv6 advantages for fake of QoS so a algorithm was designed, which make classified IPv6 Interface Identifier mapping to different level of QoS, and more the mapping can be changeable and manageable so as to provide users with a flexible and configurable QoS services. In the following section, a system for streaming media on demand was achieved. The streaming media system consists of the video streaming server, proxy and client. Among them, the video streaming proxy is the core of the system, which enables different levels of QoS VOD server to join in or withdraw from the corresponding QoS fields dynamically, and enable load balancing between the same level of QoS server, and take charge of centralized storage and management of the information for programs. This is a basic platform for streaming media transmission, which provides a solid foundation for further study. Finally the paper provides system's testing scheme, including testing tasks, methods and passed criteria. Results show that the system meets the project's development mandate, so it's accepted smoothly.
