Product Data Management (PDM) is one of the important technologies in the field of computer application, and is now developing very fast. It's a kind of technology that manages all the information and the process about production. The core of the technology is that people can freely share the isomerism data related to products during the life cycle of the products. At the same time, PDM is the integrated frame of the enterprise information. All kinds of programs, such as CAD/CAM/CAE, CAPP, MRP, and so on, can be integrated with each other by different ways. As a result, the product data distributing in all fields can be highly integrated, corresponded and shared. And the programming process will be highly optimized or recombined. As the core function of PDM, the Document Management in the PDM integrated plate, use some advanced technologies, such as the Data management, the network technology, and so on, to manage the product files, and to provide the following service-- data-storage, organizing and query. And it should also assert the consistent, integrity and security of the data. The goal of Document management is to transfer and share the files safely and effectively in the life cycle of the product.In this paper, the state-of-the-art of the product data management is reviewed. In order to resolve the problem of information storage, the three-level organization and storage model has been proposed. Based on the different levels of the abstract data, the model can be divided into three parts-- user model, product model and system model. The user model is the local data viewer of the user, which provides different ways of the distinctive users. The product model describes the structure and character of the data, and provides three different data viewers, including the oriented-document, oriented-product and oriented-task. The system model describes the structure and storage of the product data, which is the expressing ways of the data in inner system. For the sake of satisfying the need of the standard enterprise information, we propose the standard ways based on the type of the document to resolve the problem of the standard file model, standard file coding and standard document workflow. Finally, the function framework of the document management system and the working model of the system are provided.We use the J2EE framework to design and develop the enterprise document management system—AVIDM-DocMan. Combined with the project of the CAST, we give the realization examples, so as to validate the practicability of the research.
