Recently, with the rapid development of network and multimediatechnology, there have been more and more applications related withnetwork video. Moreover, in the field of video inspection, internet tendsto be utilized to realize long distance video inspection which canimplement real-time inspection everywhere and at any moment withoutany limitations of distances and the alike. The kernel part of the longdistance video inspection lies in a video collection device which can beconnected into Ethernet directly and thus proceed the collection,compression and transportation of real-time image. Aiming at such kindof application demand, a universal network video collection device isdeveloped in this paper.1. Probing into the background of video inspection system, currentresearches at home and abroad and the direction of its futuredevelopment, main principle and key technologies of the videosurveillance system based on embedded Linux is analyzed in detail.2. The author puts forward the design mode of video surveillance ofthe embedded micro-processor, Linux operating system and embeddedweb server. Besides, according to the different exploitation ways of thegeneral embedded system, exploitation environments that suit the systemdiscussed are adopted in the paper, including the establishment of thecross-compile environment, the design of Bootloader and the transfer ofthe embedded LinUx and so on.3. In the facet of video capturing, a universal camera based on USBis utilized which can greatly simplify the design of the equipmenthardware, reduce the cost and enhance the maintainability of suchequipment. During the development process of the video-capturingmodule, based on thorough research of the V4L standard and the USB camera driver under Linux, a brand new improved V4L standard is putforward. In fact, through a great many experiments, the calculation afterimprovement significantly boosts the efficiency of video capturing.4. On the aspect of video server, basing on the further study ofembedded server's principle and construction, a server-design schemewhich kernelled with Web server and carried by Java Applet is broughtforward. It realizes long distance transmission and play of video images.
