The mass and disorderly increase of intemet information makes it hard for usersto access the information and service they needed quickly and accurately, in additionthe user's increasingly demand of academic information and lag of the variousinformation organization modes on research,collection,organization and exploiture ofacademic information, the suject based information gateways(SBIGs) emerge with thetide of the times and draw broad attention, becoming the deep organization mode ofintemet information.The construction of domestic SBIG is current at the primary rising stage, andSBIG is still a newborn research field in academe. Profound understanding of themeaning and feature of SBIG, acquaintance of the development of SBIG at home andabroad, help to discuss and conclude the function of SBIG comprehensively. Throughthe comparison and analysis of the function of SBIG at home and abroad, grasping theSBIG user's requirement expectation, make it easy for us to realize the shortage of theconstruction about SBIG and get successful experience, thereby offering morepowerful function and more excellent service to users. That's what this paper aim at.In this paper, I firstly introduce the concept, main feature and types of SBIG.Combining the current situation of SBIG at home and abroad, I make an overallconclude and expatiation of the function of SBIG by dividing it to two aspects--theconstruction aspect and service aspect. Based these, we make inquisition and researchof the function of some current SBIGs at home and abroad, then perform comparisonand analysis. And I make acquaintance of user's real requirement and expectation ofSBIG by questionnaire and interview to put forward a function frame with concise structure, then make corresponding presentation. Finally, I bring forward somecountermeasure to strengthen the function of SBIG at home in allusion to theirshortages, and make a vista of the SBIG's foreground and development trend.The innovational point of this paper is that I make a overall conclusion of theSBIG's function, and throught comparison about practical situation of SBIG, deepinvestigation of users and analysis of their demand to put forward a function framewith concise structure, then to make a more clear cognition on the shortages offunction of SBIG at home, and bring forward some countermeasure to strengthenthem.The development of SBIG have a bright and optimistic future. The research ofthe SBIG's function is of great practical meaning of the development of SBIG athome and play an important role in going deep into the reserch of organization andmanagement of internet information resource.
