The emergence and quick development of Internet have brought important changes to people's information life. Great convenience is provided for the creation, delivery and use of information resources. At the same time ,a few negative influences are also come out, including information redundancy, information quality problem, etc. Facing this new information environment and new problems that Internet has brought, the subject based information gateways(SBIGs)emerge with the tide of the times, and has become a deep organization mode of network information. They effectively solve problems which search engine can't do in seeking academic information exactly, they also help to raise information retrieval efficiency, and provide tremendous convenience for professionals, teachers, students and researchers.SBIG is a networked platform which integrates information resources, tools and information services in one or more subject, and provides information retrieval and online services for users via the Internet. It develops gradually with the development of the Internet. As a new information service platform, it vividly integrates, effectively organizes and seamlessly links information resources and information services users need. It changes a distributed, numerous and complicated information system into a convenient customer information space, providing dual functions such as browsing and retrieving to satisfy customers' information needs in study and research. It also provides personalized customization services. The paper is divided into six parts:The first chapter introduces the conception, main characteristics and types of SBIGs. SBIG is a deep organization mode of networked information and it is an online service which aims to provide a trusted source of human-selected, evaluated, high quality Internet information for users. The characteristics of SBIG include professionality, integration, knowledgeablity, intelligibility and responsibility. As far as subject is concerned, SBIG can be divided into three categories: general SBIG, SBIG in some subjects and SBIG covers in one subject. The next chapter analyses the resources selection criteria of SBIG According to the resources selection process, the paper first introduces how to define the user group. Then on the basis of the main users' needs the author discusses the resources scope policy on content, access issues, metadata demands, language and types of resource.Resource maintenance rules should be made to keep the accuracy and validity of information resource provided by SBIG.The third chapter mainly explores information description and control in SBIG, decides whether users can get what they need quickly, exactly and conveniently. SBIG make a quality control via metadata description, classification and thesaurus. In the end of this part, metadata, classification and thesaurus used in some important SBIGs of home and abroad are listed and compared. The fourth chapter introduces information services which are the purpose of information organization in SBIG, emphasis is put on three important parts: information retrieval, reference service and personalized customization service. In the end of this part, a list comparing main service provided in SBIGs at home and abroad is also provided,. The author analyzes the gap on information service between SBIGs in China and those in other countries. The fifth chapter five comparres three main SBIGs in library and information sciences: Bulletin Board for Libraries, Libraries of Networked Knowledge(BUBL LINK), Librarians' Index to the Internet(LII) and Chinese National Science Digital Library(CSDL) in resources selection criteria, classification, thesauri, types of resource and information service. Analysis of the SBIGs shows that there exists many problems in SBIGs in China and we should learn something from the successful experience of foreign SBIGs.At last, the paper discusses the status quo and problems of information organization in SBIG In this part, the author first introduces the developing stages of SBIG, emphasize the current situation of SBIG at home and abroad, then points out difficulties and problems SBIG is facing (such as the legalization, normalization and standardization of SBIG, the exploitation and application of new technologies, the update and maintenance of the web, and so on), and puts forward some countermeasures. Finally, the paper make a forecast about the development trends of SBIG in the future.
