Metallographic cutting machines are mainly used for the cutting of metallographic samplings and various materials. They are used broadly in mechanism, metallurgy, avigation and so on. After the ninth decade in 20th century, metallographic technology has developed so rapidly that metallographic cutting machines have gained great progress as metallographic sampling devices. At present there are various types of metallographic cutting devices and various products of half-automatic and automatic have been used broadly in different enterprises'labs. And they enable us to reduce the work of the operators, enhance the efficiency of samplings. The sampling devices based on the microprocessor are the representatives of the advanced technique of the metallographic devices. By the combination of hardware and software, the increase of soft cutting-methods, we have gained metallographic samplings with high accuracy and performance, excellent reappearance which the hand work is impossible to do.This paper makes use of the combination of software and hardware to achieve the control of the machine. The overall system is mainly composed by two parts: control system and display system. The control system mainly controls a direct current motor and three stepping motor by CPU. The direct current motor is used to control the rotational speed of the grinding wheel. A stepping motor controls the vertical motion of the grinding wheel. The second controls the fore-and-aft traction of the platform.The third controls the left-right traction of the platform. The display system mainly has two functions: input and display. You can input all the cutting related quantity through the keyboard, for instance: The grinding wheel rotational speed, the cutting depth, the cutting speed and so on. The display system shows the establishment cutting parameter before cutting and shows the cutting remainder in the cutting process. The transmission of the dates between the control system and the display system is achieved via the serial port. The system uses the CRC verification to reduce the error code.The control system of the cutting machine that has designed in this paper has tow kinds of workings: automatic operation and manual operation. It has three kinds of cutting modes: cut off workpiece once; cut off workpiece with advancing three steps and retreating one step; cut off workpiece layer by layer.The cutting ability of the cutting machine was enhanced,so that cutting machine can cut off various sizes of parts efficiently.
