People want to share the computing resource and information service anywhere and the Pervasive Computing is a novel computing model which satisfies this requirement. The wireless sensor network is an important research area of the Pervasive Computing. The wireless sensor network, which is made by the convergence of sensors, micro-electro-mechanism systems and network technologies, is a novel technology about acquiring and processing information. More and more academic researchers and people from industry are engaged in developing the wireless sensor network due to the great promising potential with various applications.The wireless sensor network is a data-centric system, and data cannot be transmitted without routing protocols in a network. After presenting the classification standards for routing protocols, the key mechanisms of existing representative routing protocols are analyzed. The characteristics of routing protocols for the wireless sensor network are described. Theoretically the author presents an analytic evaluation for the directed diffusion and two ideal schemes: flooding and multicast. The key mechanisms of the directed diffusion algorithm are analyzed.The paper stresses the working principle and propagation mechanism of the directed diffusion and designs a simulation model by using the Network Simulator 2 (NS2). Therefore the directed diffusion is implemented. The author chooses two metrics to analyze the performance of the directed diffusion and to compare it to other schemes: the average dissipated energy and the average delay. By analyzing the results of the simulation, the paper points out that the directed diffusion has an outstanding progress on the energy conservation and the time delay. Compared to other schemes, the directed diffusion can prolong the network lifetime.An idea that efficient schemes with transmission power control could be used in the directed diffusion algorithm is presented. The author does the qualitative analysis in the paper. Simulation about this has been carried out, which will help for the further study.
