Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a new technology developed in recent years, the earliest application is in military area. Nowadays, these lower price WSN nodes even can been applied in space exploration, radiation detection, flooding precaution, farmland management, biology community observation, mobile target tracking, environment and meteorological monitoring, intelligent transportation, and intelligent home automation system, etc. WSN fuse many current hot technologies such as sensor technology, embedded technology, and network communication technology, etc. Its development has been written in National Guideline on Medium- and Long- Term Program for Science and Technology Development (2006-2020) by State Council. WSN is walking up to us nearer and nearer.WSN differ from traditional network communication technology in many aspects, one of the key issues is the energy consumed by sensor nodes. Reducing the energy consumed by sensor nodes can be achieved by any layer in WSN protocol stack. This paper mainly concerns how to reduce sensor nodes consumed energy by optimizing routing algorithm of network layer.Currently, many routing algorithms have taken energy consumed into special consideration at the beginning of designing. But most of them only concern the coordination among sensor nodes, while neglecting the positive function of their own status parameters in reducing energy consumed by sensor nodes. Based on the analysis of many current routing algorithms, paper adds a door limit mechanism in energy module of Directed Diffusion algorithm to reducing energy consumed by sensor nodes.Paper realized the improved algorithm on NS2 platform, the result of many simulation experiments show that the improved algorithm has obviously positive effect on decreasing average consumed energy (prolonging network life time), nodes death ratio, and packet transmission delay. And network scale simulation research further prove that the improved algorithm has positive effect on reducing average consumed energy and increasing packet sent-received ratio.Although the improve algorithm is realized in Directed Diffusion, the design idea and measure can also be used in many other WSN routing algorithm.
