The broadband data wireless access is the goal of 3G, therefore the data traffic will sharply grow along with the 3G network. At present, the main information content in metropolitan transmission network is loaded by SDH. SDH is mainly designed for loading voice service, which is wasting the bandwidth seriously, and isn't fit for the 3G transmission network. So, how to construct the effective transmission network based on the existing network foundation, which suits the 3G service requests, becomes urgent problem that can't wait to be solved.The paper firstly analyzes the situation that MSTP supports TDM, ATM and the IP technology. Then according to the characteristics of 3G service, it analyzes the requests of the 3G service to transmission network, Next, the paper makes a comparison of transmission performance for the 3G service of three kinds of transmission platforms: SDH, ATM, and MSTP. And combined with the actual situation of transmission network, it proposes the construction of metropolitan transmission network which is based on the MSTP technology.In the actual networking, the paper brings forward ATM technology based on MSTP to load the services in the early construction of 3G network. In the instance of having great distinction in different nodes, we can configure transmission link of the Iub interface making use of IMA E1 and ATM VP-Ring technology, then advance the bandwidth utilization and reduce the cost of networking. After the gradual development of 3G, we can make use of RPR technology based on MSTP to upgrade 3G network to a complete IP netowork smoothly. And it also brings forward that we can make use of the embedded RPR technology to load the Iub data traffic of IP UTRAN, in order to improve service quality and bandwidth utilization, at the same time to actualize the two layersQ~data insulation in the transmission link from Node B to RNC. At last, in order to solve the lack of useable fiber's core in the process of construction and upgrade of 3G transmission netowork, it puts forward Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing technology, after analyzing the cost and technology requirements of the metropolitan transmission network. In the end of the paper, it designs a 3G metropolitan transmission network according to the technology above combining with the actual project.Then it makes a simulation test. The result shows that the proposed viewpoint is feasible and could successfully support voice and data services. Then the original intention comes true: constructing the transmission platform which meets the five requirements and suits the transmission of 3G service.
