Ad hoc network is a network consisting of a set of mobile hosts capable of communicating with each other without the assistance of base stations. This wireless network has many characteristics, such as mobility, distributed, multi-hip and etc. In this network, a node has dual function. It is a terminal, and also a router at the same time. The node has the functions to gain routes and retransmit packets. So it is extremely suitable for the disaster relief emergency correspondence and the military domain. Research on Ad hoc networks is challengeable because of the frequent changed network topology, the limited correspondence bandwidth, the limited energy of nodes, and other similar reasons. As far as we know, routing protocols is the biggest problem in Ad hoc networks. In recent years, with the development of the GIS technology and the performance of the mobile termination, location management become a new problem under the research on Ad hoc network. By using the efficient location management scheme, notes could get the position of the destination notes by use a GPS receiver or other localization techniques, then set up the connection and send the messages.AODV protocol is the most widely used in Ad hoc network, it combines the characteristics of both DSR protocol and DSDV protocol. It takes advantage of serial number from DSDV protocol, deals with the routing discovery process and routing maintenance process. In this paper, we introduce the standard of AODV protocol which defined by IETF, explain how to maintain the topology, how to get and confirm the position of the every mobile node. We present a new protocol called "An improved AODV routing protocol based on location information", proved it works well by using the OPNET simulate the networks.Base on the new routing protocol, we present a novel location management scheme which combines advantages of both the SLALoM scheme and the HGRID scheme; introduce the location management in PCS networks. We split a large Ad hoc network into several grids, and choose one or more gird as the location sever grid, every mobile node can update its information by the special function. Meanwhile, according to the mobility of the nodes, network size, mobility and traffic, the signaling overhead , we introduce the threshold M that limits the updating cost, eliminates the ping-pong effect, decreases the overhead cost of the location control information. By Matlab analyze, this scheme is a completely scalable location management scheme which scales well for large scale mobile ad hoc networks.Although a significant amount of research work has been accomplished in the area of Ad hoc networks, we have identified additional topics based on our research that need further attention. There are still a lot of works in future research, such as: energy efficiency, quality of service in wireless networks, security problems, etc. The hybrid networks which is the Ad hoc networks connect with other networks must become a new hot point.
