The error correcting coding and modulation are designed and implemented respectively in the traditional digital transmission system, the same to decoding and demodulation. In the early 80s, Ungerboeck introduced a new viewpoint, named as Trellis Coded Modulation, according to the character of modulation and error correcting coding. Its basic idea is to partition the constellation optimally by coding, so that the maximal distance between the modulated signal vector can be obtained. Therefore, it can improve the reliability without reducing the efficiency with the same power. It can be specially used in power-limited and band-limited channels. Its applications in satellite communication and mobile communication make it be a research focus again.This paper introduces the principle of TCM, then presents a new method of TCM coding;introduces the principle and approach of Viterbi decoding for Convolutional Coding, then analyses the character of Vitebi decoding for TCM; introduces the performance and coding gain of TCM in the condition of AGWN noise, then simulates it with MATLAB to verify the point;introduces the flow of digital logic design, then introduces the modules of TCM system based on FPGA.
