In recent years, along with the rapid development and widely application of computer, network, and wireless communication technology, the wireless sensor networks have aroused wide concern. The research on it has become a worldwide focus. The wireless sensor networks has a bright future in the application of environment monitoring, military sensing, health care, smart home monitoring and other commercial fields. ZigBee technology is a newly emerging short-distance wireless communication protocol. It has the features of low power consumption, high density of nodes per network, and these make it a suitable protocol of sensor networks.The thesis introduces the wireless sensor networks'structure, application field, features and evolution of domestic and international. Based on these, the thesis presents to use ZigBee protocol in wireless sensor networks. The protocol's features, stack architecture and function of every layer are introduced in the thesis. Comparison is made among several communication protocols. The formation of network, data transfer mode and realization of ZigBee stack are illustrated.After the theoretically research, the thesis delves into the realization of sensor networks based on ZigBee protocol. It founds on the wireless data transmission of water-sludge interface data of secondary sedimentation tank in WTP. Hardware formation and software design are presented. The thesis mainly analyses how to create a star topology network including coordinator and sensor nodes. The hardware is composed of MCU+RF. Software design based on Microchip ZigBee stack, a water-sludge interface data Profile is developed in this application. Application frame format (include KVP and MSG frame) are designed. The coordinator is connected to a PC through serial port, so a user interface program is developed using VB6. The data storage is in the form of Access database. Using wireless sensor networks to transfer data of mobile sensor node is very convenient and feasible.
