In the age of knowledge economy, Knowledge Service (KS) has brought active force to the academic libraries for their development and values. From the analysis of the view and the experience on KS, the author found that although there were a few scholars recognized the superiority of subject knowledge service (SKS), there were still some problems in the SKS of academic libraries in theories and practices. The author defined SKS and designed the mode of SKS on the basis of studying the correlative contents of SKS, and investigating actualities of academic libraries'service and the subject librarians'service, wishing the research can be beneficial to practices of the academic libraries.Firstly, the author believed that different main bodies and objects of service had different aims of services, so the concept of academic library KS has its own special meaning. Combine with the feature and superiority of the academic libraries, the author defined the SKS and point out the inevitability.Secondly, in order to understand the level of academic libraries' KS in our country, the author investigated the actualities of the academic libraries'service and the service ability of subject librarians. Then the author summed up the problems of SKS in academic libraries and divided the SKS of the academic libraries into two layers: the basic service layer and the focal service layer. Also the author pointed out that the focal service layer is the important content of the future SKS in academic libraries.Thirdly, based on the analysis above, the author designed a subject knowledge service mode of the academic libraries. This system had six basic elements: SKS users, SKS intelligent platform, subject librarians, information resource databases, knowledge base and subject librarians'professional work platform. They constituted a need-driven, dynamic, personalized, subject system. During the LKS process, the key contents are application of information technique, construction of knowledge base, the provision of the personalized service and service quality control. In addition, in order to improve the ability of SKS in academic libraries and achieve the knowledge innovation, corresponding countermeasures should be made, such as administrative innovations, the development of the subject librarians and the share of subject knowledge service.In conclusion, the academic libraries in China still position in the low level of knowledge service, and can't meet the complicated needs of users. But they are developing towards the deep level direction of knowledge services. Our academic libraries should take actions to adapt this trend.
