Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is short-range wireless network consisting of densely deployed large number of sensor nodes with different specs and functions. Each sensor node has ability of apperceiving, computing and communicating; they form a network through ad-hoc mode. The sensor node periodically collects environment data and sends processed data or information to sink. Sensor network can apperceive, inspect and gather the information of a given object or environment through wireless communication between each node. Wireless sensor network is very different from traditional network, the former focus on data, and the later focus on transmission of data. Sensor network technology was firstly used in military systems. But now, it has been used in almost all of the fields with the development of sensor network technology. At the same time, it more and more requires lower cost, larger battery life, more reliable and robust communications, so, ZigBee protocol emerge as the times require.ZigBee technology is a developed short distance wireless two-way communication technology. This technology has the merits of agreement simply, the power loss low, the network ability strong, the network capacity big, when extended short, safe, reliable and the cost is low and so on. It also had the functions of way choice, automatically links the network and self-recovery. ZigBee wireless sensor network combines sensor technology, communication technology and computer technology together. It has the ability of collecting, transferring and processing data.This paper first introduced the conception of ZigBee technology, the architecture, the characters and its application domain. Then the superiority of the ZigBee technology was discussed by comparing the ZigBee technology with Blue Teeth, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave technologies, which is parallel with ZigBee. Second, the realization of network construction based on ZigBee is proposed. Then, a simple network layer was constructed through three steps of scanning the channels, establishment the PAN network and the establishment the association between nodes. Compared with the traditional algorithm of wireless sensor networks, this algorithm of network has high flexibility, scalability and energy conservation. Finally, the algorithm is implemented on the Freescale's development kit.This paper also has simulated ZigBee wireless sensor network performance, and discussed network security, energy efficiency and robustness, and so on. We focused on analysis of the impact of energy conservation of network using the method of relay-communication. Finally, the network is primarily applicable to the following characteristics of areas: Cluster members within the near distance between nodes; not often need to re-clustering or cluster head will be designed supplied by unregulated power, Cluster network among members rarely communicate, and so on.This paper has used this kind of network to prevent mistake of the substation system because the control network of substation has little distance among nodes in the same cluster, the cluster head can be designed supplied by unregulated power, and cluster network among members rarely communicate, and so on. We replaced the on-line system of transformer substation with wireless control network based on ZigBee. This not only retained the on-line way timeliness strong characteristic, but also overcame the shortcomings such as excessive wiring, difficult construction, and high cost. This system has three characters: network has cluster of structure; work pattern is "awakened when demanded"; To use relay-communication to resolve the communication problem between the cluster head node and the central node when they are far away.
