Fingerprint identification technology is an important and ascendant biometric identification technology, and it is also a research hotspot.Conventional solution schemes for the embedded fingerprint identificationis are usually suggested by using single chip microcomputers (SCM) or "SCM+DSP". With the development of semiconductor technology, a new scheme is proposed, by which fingerprint identification based on logical FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) units and soft-core CPU downloaded to FPGA has been successfully realized. The scheme is simple, flexible, low-cost, programmable, and apt to upgrade system. The scheme for the embedded fingerprint identification system based on soft-core NIOS II processor is discussed. The structure, capability and bus specification of NIOS II as well as system demands are investigated. Quartus II, an integrated development environment (IDE), is introduced. Efficiency is improved by linking the system level design and DSP arithmetic, as well as studying on SOPC Builder and DSP Builder.Main innovation as follows:1. The full flows of fingerprint identification are analyzed, including the preprocessing methods of images, classification of characters and feature matching. A new method is gived out, that can complete fingerprint identification accurately, the process of identification is that general characters are classified firstly and then minutiae are matched later.2. Function and structure of the system are analyzed, and the full design scheme is proposed. Finally, the whole flows of fingerprint identification is carried out on the board of DE2_ep2c35, erenow, the source codes have been compiled, debuged and verified in a PC.3. System design is optimized by using consumer instruction, reusing module and switching C codes to FPGA codes, finally, minutia arithmetic is optimized and system level simulation is passed through.in Matlab/simulink.
