Internet Protocol Multicast is a bandwidth-conserving technology that reduces traffic by simultaneously delivering a single stream of information to multi-users and homes. It delivers source traffic to multiple receivers without adding any additional burden on the source or the receivers while using the least network bandwidth of any competing technology, so it always is a hot topic of internet technolgy. Meanwhile, the embedded system is playing more and more important role in people's life. It is becoming a trend to develop software in embedded system, so to study the IPv6 multicast technology in embedded system is meaningful.The work in this paper is based on National"863"Continued Project-"Protocol Stack Software of IPv6 Router with High Performance and HUAWEI Technologies Co. Ltd Foundation- the Research of IPv6 Multicast,Security and VPN technology. In the first of this paper, the foundational knowledge of IP multicast and embedded system are introduced , and on the base of analyzing the background, advantages and the development process of IP Multicast and embedded technology, the importance of developing multicast protocol stack in the embedded system was pointed out. Then the basic knowledge of IP multicast is introduced including IPv6 technology analysis, the map of multicast address to MAC address, multicast group management and the knowledge of multicast forwarding and so on, and also the current main multicast technologies are compared. Consequently, the analysis of embedded system is given and the modules of PIM-SM are divided in details. Then the way to implement and code of each module are introduced. At the last of this paper, the test of the software was carried out in different level and the result analysis was given.
