With the quick development of global internet and internet of things, the needs of accessing to the internet will keep on growing, and the problems of IPv4network are becoming more serious. For example, the short of IP address, a huge routing table, lack of support for security and mobility, complex address configuration, lack of support for the quality of service, etc. All of these restrict the development of internet. Accommodating the development of recent network and network in the future, we should do research on the recent network and improve it.In the early1990s, IETF devoted to the research and development of Next Generation (IPng). IPng is a new version for IP, for replacement of the recent used IPv4. The version number for IPng is six, so it is called as IPv6.With the widely application of embedded devices, the request for its accessing to the network is becoming more and more urgent. At the present stage, embedded devices are accessing to the internet through IPv4. The IPv4address will be exhausted as the increasing number of computers which has been accessed to the internet. The technology of IPv6will successfully solve the problem that the limited address of IPv4could not meet the needs of accessing embedded devices to the network. IPv6will enlarge the address space from232to2128. The huge address space permits that every embedded device could access to the internet as an independent entity, without restriction of address limitation. Under the background of the internet transition from IPv4to IPv6, the realization of IPv6on embedded device is an irresistable trend.This thesis gives a general statement of several basic agreements of IPv6protocol stack. Combined with the feature of embedded device system, it gives a general idea for the design of IPv6protocol stack on embedded device system. It discusses the whole framework of IPv6protocol stack, and detailed introduces different kinds of mechanism for the realization of protocol stack. On the basis of this, it clips protocol stack, gives processing procedures for data, and introduces the details for realization of protocol stack modules.
