The successful development of Internet changes people's life greatly. But the IPv4 protocol can not meet the demands of Internet application. In such case, IETF issued the IPv6 after comparing different kinds of IPng (IP next generation) in the early 1990's. At the same time, with the rapid development of the broadband network technology, the increasing growth of the service about multimedia stimulates the popularity and development of IP multicast.Multicast is a bandwidth-conserving technology that reduces traffic by simultaneously delivering a single stream of information to thousands of corporate recipients and homes, and the packets are replicated in the network by some supporting multicast protocols resulting in the most efficient delivery of data to multiple receivers possible.Multicast has become an indispensable technology of the next generation of Internet.Multicast protocol based on IPv6 is the necessary and important part of IPv6 protocols and IPv6 standard requires that any equipment must support multicast. PIM-SM (Protocol Independent Multicast-Sparse Mode) is a multicast routing protocol independent of some specific unicast routing protocol, and has become the de facto inter-domain standard of multicast routing protocol.Firstly, this thesis discusses the background, predominance and research status of IPv6 multicast technology, and points out the significance of studying and implementing the IPv6 multicast router protocols. Secondly, it introduces the related basic knowledge of IPv6 multicast, including packet format, multicast address, multicast tree, multicast forward and multicast protocols of IPv6. Thirdly, the PIM-SM multicast routing protocol is analyzed in detail, and some tests are done under the IPv6 environment constructed in the laboratory, such as BSR election, RP election, "Hello" packet release and data flow tree switch based on PIM-SM protocol. The test results show that the protocol works normally and supports the multicast system well.Fourthly, an IPv6 Multicast chat system is designed and implemented by Visual Studio .NET 2003 under Windows, and runs on .NET Framework 2.0 environment. The system provides multi-users with real-time information exchange, and basically realizes the application of IPv6 Multicast. Finally, the current problems of the IP multicast technique are analyzed, and the further work about the IP multicast is given.
