With the rapid development of the broadband network technology, the increasing growth of the service about multimedia stimulates the popularity and development of IP multicast. Multicast has become an indispensable technology of the next generation of Internet. And the traditional IPv4 cannot satisfy people's requirements for bigger address space, better quality of service, mobility, security, and so on. The new IPv6 protocol is inevitable.Multicast protocol based on IPv6 is an inevitable and important part of IPv6 protocols. Routers support IP multicast through multicast routing protocol. PIM-SM(Protocol Independent Multicast-Sparse Mode) has become the inter-domain standard of multicast routing protocol. According to the fact that there is no fledged product of multicast routing protocol based on IPv6, the design and implementation of multicast routing protocol is present in the paper. At the beginning of this paper, the arisen background, predominance of IPv6 multicast technology are fully discussed. Based on analyzing the multicast research status in internal and international, it clarifies the significance of studying and implementing the IPv6 multicast route protocols. Subsequently, introduces the basic knowledge of IPv6 multicast, and analyzes and compares the advantages and shortcomings of the five current multicast routing protocols. After the performing principles and key technique of PIM-SM are discussed in detail, puts the emphasis on systemic explaining the implementing of IPv6 multicast using PIM-SMv2. And the system's test results in a simulate circumstance are given. Finally presence problems of this technique are analyzed, and some suggestions on develop prospects of IP multicast are given. Future implementers of new transforms will get favourable hints through this paper.
