The Research And Application Of Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6)

With the incessant development of Internet, Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) has revealed many defects in address space, Internet security, quality of service and configuration. This situation spurs the emergence and growth of IPv6. Since the substitution of IPv6 for IPv4 is an inevitable tendency, the construction of campus LAN should take into consideration how to support and be adapted to IPv6.With an aim to grasp relevant knowledge, make basic application and accumulate experiences and an attempt to study the transitive technology from IPv4 to IPv6 and compare services and applications of IPv4 and IPv6 , this project designs and realizes the experimental LAN upon campus LAN and provides the application services of IPv6. On the thorough analysis of IPv6 on address space, address allocation, domain name server, route protocol and security, this project sets up the experimental network for IPv6 in a confined environment and provides such basic services as WEB and DNS. It establishes the Instant Messenger System and VOD Video on demand on the IPv6 basis through studies in the extension of application principles. It also examnies the transition from Ipv4 to IPv6 from technical perspective and the distinctions of IPv 4 and IPv6 in common services and applications. This paper also gives out the steps to adopt and tips to attend in the transition of Campus LAN to IPv6.The research fully displays the great advantage of IPv6 over IPv4 in address space, quality of services and other aspects and the inevitable tendency for IPv6 to be the standard of Internet in the new generation in place of IPv4.
