With the development of integrated optics, all kinds of optical wave-guide devices with different function and structure have appeared. Designing wave-guide completely by experimental method is complicated, while design a wave-guide with CAD method can not only overcome such difficulty but also analyze the characters of optical wave-guide and thus lead to a quick designation. Then numerical algorithms are used to analyze integrated optical wave-guide and beam propagation method (BPM) is a good method which is widely used. It has strong practicability and can calculate guide wave mode and radiation mode together. It calculate very fast and accurate, and save a great deal of time and cost for us.Polymer material is very promising in fabricating integration optical waveguide devices. Polymer waveguide devices are potential project in the field of optical communication and interconnection. Optical polymers waveguide are a research hot topic and particularly attractive in integrated optical waveguide devices because they offer easy integration, rapid response and low cost. This dissertation is concentrated on lucubrate the passive polymer waveguide devices, including numerical simulation, material characteristic, fabrication, application.The theory of optical wave-guide is considered at first in this paper. Two methods which we use to analyze optical wave-guide in common use are introduced: Macartili approximation and effective index method. Then finite difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM) is recommended and also the boundary condition which is used during the simulation. Afterwards, three kinds of wave-guide configurations are designed and analyzed, including Y-branch splitter, directional coupler and Mach-Zender modulator. Basing on the theories of these devices, we can use the software about BPM to design them. From the results of the simulation, some appropriate parameters of structure are received. At last, the templates about them are designed using L-edit.The choice about the polymer and how to preparation are considered in the last chapter. The technique flow is also given.
