Research On The Application Of Data Warehouse And Data Mining In The Analysis Of Students' Academic Achievements

Data warehouse and data mining is one of the most active branches of database researching, developing and application. It is also the key factor in decision support system. Data warehouse is a subject oriented and time-variant collection of data which support the process of management decision. It is integrated as well as stable. Data mining is a process to analysis the data in database and data warehouse in order to acquire knowledge by means of artificial intelligence. The combination of them can serve enterprises and related department better by providing convincing evidences in decision analysis.At the present time, computer and network are common used in universities. The realization of digital campus is in progress in many universities. Many departments are perfecting their Management Information Systems. So that, a lot of complete data accumulated and became valuable information resources. But by now, these data are mainly used to provide simple searching and statistics reports, the connotative information of these data haven't been fully used. So it is a challenge to mine the valuable information by the technology of data warehouse and data mining, and to provide convincing evidences for the decision of Campus Management Departments. It has a social signality to develop the research of data warehouse and data mining technology, and it can also develop the education and efficiency.According to the study of data warehouse theory and data mining technology, and integrating the character of Students' Scores Management System in Comprehensive Affair Management System of Guizhou University, the idea of applying the dada warehouse and data mining technology in to students'scores analysis is raised in the thesis. First of all, the new technology of data warehouse and data mining, together with actual status of Affair Management System are introduced. Then the application of data warehouse and data mining technology in Teaching Management is investigated. Data warehouse prototype is designed. The process of multidimensional data modeling by Microsoft Analysis Service is introduced. The Students'Scores Data Warehouse of Electrical Engineering Institute of Guizhou University is designed and established according to Teaching Management Information System of Guizhou University, collection of the students'scores information data and by using SQL Server 2000 Analysis Service. OLAP operation and data exhibition are also realized in multidimensional data cube. And then the reappearance of analysis data is also completed by using Microsoft Analysis Service and pivot table. At last, data mining algorithm of association rules are researched, and learn a modified algorithm based on Apriori Algorithm. The modified algorithm can use the new method of creating candidate item sets to improve the efficiency of association rules mining. The modified algorithm in data mining can be used in students'scores data management by the tool of Visual C#, so that we can make deep analysis to students'scores data, work out related trend, and use the results of data mining to analyze and predict their scores, provide basis for teaching arrangements and students management in the future.
