The project is to design a new type and multi-function video format convert chip, together with a SOC platform, which can be configurable in order to fit for various display.In the paper, a design of OSD system based on video format convert chip is introduced, including the realization of I2C communication, data-pass and overlap of image and video.The system specification, compartmentalization and design of sub modules, logic synthesis, formality, functional simulation, etc. are described in detail in this thesis. The number of components is reduced as few as possible since the reduction of area and power consumption of the chip is taken into prior consideration in the design. At the same time, resource sharing is fulfilled and the control part is simplified.Following Top-Down IC design method, the design is divided into several sub-modules, and they are described in Verilog. Separate functional simulations, syntheses, and gate-level simulations of every sub-module are done at first before the whole system is synthesized and debugged.In the process of writing Verilog source codes, their synthesizability and reliability are considered at first. All the source codes are written in synthesizable Verilog sentences. Single-clock control is applied to make design more reliable after synthesis. Key paths are optimized to minimize delays. The operating frequency can reach 139.198MHz after synthesized on Xilinx FPGA platform.The OSD system is designed to overlap with video signals, which supports single window OSD display, non-transparent character effect and six colors of OSD menu. The system provides the platform of video format convert chip with the interacting interface, which will be convenient for debugging and verification of the whole system.meanwhile, the OSD system is compatible, which can be applied in different situations.
