The optical transmission network is deployed as a basic platform in the current telecommunication network. The architecture and function of the transmission network are changing with the emerged multi-service transmission requirements such as IP and other data services. The Automatic Switched Optical Network (ASON) technology is the evolution result from the traditional optical transmission network with the help of IP technologies.This thesis describes the generation and development of ASON technology, traces the latest standards, and introduces the characteristics and advantages of ASON. In particularly, the thesis introduces the key technologies of control plan of the ASON based on SDH/OTN. After we analysis the architecture and traffic of optical transmission network, we further discuss why and how to introduce the ASON technology into the existing network, and clarify the ASON equipment application and position.VPItransportMaker? is a commercial tool for transport network design. The thesis introduces the function and design methods of MESH module, and illustrates how to use VPItransportMaker? software to design different traffic demands on an ASON network. In brief, the thesis also introduces policies to further optimize the ASON network.The thesis summarizes the experience and major result in ASON network design and optimization that the author worked with. We hope it will be helpful for the future massive ASON network application in China market.
