With the rapid development of internet, the IP traffic growth is exponential. The primary services carried by the telecommunication network are upgrading from the traditional voice traffic to the data traffic, which brings a great challenge to the transport technology: one is the characteristic of data traffic, and the other is the amount of traffic. The self-similar, dynamical, and burst characteristic of data is very different to the voice traffic. The appearance of intelligent optical networks (ION) not only meets the increasing needs of bandwidth, but also copes well with the burst data traffic. Intelligent optical networks can automatically establish dynamic traffic connections and effectively configure network resources. And also multiple schemes for rapid restoration are provided in ION. These incredible network functions are realized due to many intelligent control mechanisms, such as signaling, routing and survivability technologies. Survivability is the vital technology which greatly impacts the performance of optical networks. Meanwhile it is distinct and relative. In failure condition, survivability technology can ensure the restorations of affected traffics.In this dissertation, our research work focus on survivability in ASON. After extensive and systematical analysis of ION, we make deep and innovative research on some key survivability technologies. The main works and innovative results are listed as follow:-- After analyze the survivability properties of IP network, SDH network and ASON, we give the advantages of ASON survivability techniques compared with those of other networks. And then we focus on the ASON survivability and give its evaluation system.-- We analyze the schemes for protection and restoration in ASON. We present the application schemes of protection and restoration. And then we use some cases to give the simulation of protection and restoration for SNCP and PRC service in ASON. The result shows that the schemes for protection and restoration of ASON can ensure the survivability of network well.
