In this thesis, the design and implementation of network video monitoring system based on SOPC is presented. System on a programmable chip is designed for the development of embedded system. By embedding a micro-processor in FPGA, SOPC not only takes the advantage of micro-processor system which is rich in software and hardware resource, it also is a part of FPGA system which has fast logic, so SOPC is considered to be the direction of the future in embedded field. Meanwhile, some people adopt a wait-and-see attitude as SOPC is not mature enough. This thesis fills the blank in the SOPC application of video monitoring system, and tries to find the advantage and disadvantage of the SOPC system.This design based on SOPC platform which uses Nios II embedded processor. Compared with traditional embedded system, SOPC system provides a unique parallel development of the design. The design of processor is on the top which provides Nios II core and Avalon fabric. The design of hardware system is responsible for addition of IP core and configuration of FPGA. The design of software system implements drivers and application program.The video monitoring system is divided into three parts which are video acquisition, encoding and transmission. Video acquisition module uses USB camera for data capture, and designs USB host controller based on CH374, then accesses image data in USB camera through USB host controller; Video encoder based on H.263 standard is responsible for compressing image data comes from USB host controller. This thesis improves the performance of critical algorithm in H.263 encoder by using C2H compiler which can convert C program to hardware accelerator; Video transmission module uses Ethernet as a transmission medium, designs driver of ethernet controller DM9000 and implements the interface to LwIP for providing integrated network, so it can transmit H.263 stream from UDP client to UDP host which are programmed by Socket.This thesis which implemented the video monitoring system based on SOPC accomplished the basic function of video acquisition, encoding and transmission, and achieved satisfactory performance by optimizing based on SOPC characteristic.SOPC is still in its initial stages, is not mature enough and lack of design resources. Hope that this thesis can provide some help to SOPC designer and the development of SOPC technique.
