This paper discusses both principle and implementation of the design pattern of peripheral circuit with low coupling to CPU. It puts forward a new design pattern of peripheral circuit to solve problems like CPU bottleneck and tight correlation between software and hardware, which come from traditional design pattern of peripheral circuit with high coupling to CPU. New pattern can improve performance of system, reduce total cost and meet increasing peripheral equipments very well. This design pattern of peripheral circuit with low coupling to CPU is based on programmable logic technology. Through research on programmable logic technology, theory of peripheral circuit with low coupling to CPU and actual cases in engineering application, this paper gives a detail description of this design pattern.Firstly, this paper summarizes the achievements of programmable logic technology, especially the theory of programmable logic, hardware description language and configuration to programmable logic device.Secondly, this paper does detail research and analysis on theory design pattern of peripheral circuit with low coupling to CPU. By discussing peripheral circuit's concept and function, this paper explains why peripheral circuit and CPU core circuit should be divided and design targets of each other. Then this paper summarizes characters of traditional design pattern and points out that tight relation between peripheral circuit and CPU in traditional pattern restricts the system efficiency from hardware architecture, task capability, development and cooperation between software and hardware, and finally reduces system performance. This paper gives a solution(design pattern of peripheral circuit with low coupling to CPU)to avoid this disadvantage of traditional pattern. Inserting a programmable logic layer into CPU and peripheral circuit, we can turn down dependence between peripheral circuit and CPU. It can improve system's simultaneous ability and efficiency, and reduce CPU's burthen and system's complexity. This paper discusses three key technologies of design pattern of peripheral circuit with low coupling to CPU in detail. At the end of theory research, this paper lists seven advantages of new design pattern compared with traditional pattern.At last, this paper verifies the design pattern of peripheral circuit with low coupling to CPU by series of actual engineering cases. Every case is realized in both traditional pattern and new pattern.These cases, which cover from hardware/software design, static/dynamic performance and circuit/application level, show obvious advantages of design pattern of peripheral circuit with low coupling to CPU.In this paper, not only a new design pattern of peripheral circuit with low coupling to CPU is successfully put forward and implemented in engineering application with good results, but also the methods are commonly helpful to other electronic system designs, in which lies the meaning of our work.
