The image enhancement technology is one of directions in video image processing technology, and it has played an important role in the elimination noise, improving image quality and feature extraction areas. It is a high requirement for real-time processing video image, due to the characteristic that video image demands not only large amount of data but also fast speed. At the same time, with the rapid development of semiconductor process technology, integration level of field programmable logic device FPGA increases rapidly, FPGA has overcome the disadvantage that image is processed slowly by software, and has the distinguishing feature including rich in logic resources, design low-cost, system flexibility, high-speed parallel, reconfigurable strongly. So FPGA technology has become a research focus in video image processing.By digital video theory and image enhancement technology study and understanding, this paper has designed real-time video image enhancement system under the FPGA platforms. The system has used Xilinx's Virtex-4 chip as its core device, and has been mainly composed of two parts:hardware and software. In software design, the paper has builded a platform EDK development system, and has realized the configuration to video decoding chip TVP5150 and video encoding chip SAA7121 through FPGA programming the I2C bus, thus has obtained the data stream and synchronization signal that is needed by hardware processing. In the hardware design, in order to complete the data stream processing, the paper has used VHDL hardware language and designed square filter module, median filtering module, the mean filter modules, sharpening filter modules, and the ranks of the module count module in the ISE design platform. The core concept of this design is that data stream is processed real-timely by way of being cached to the window module, to achieve that the real-time video image is enhanced. Through designing different square filter module and continuous debugging, the paper has got different video image processing effects. And it is meaningful to the further in research of video image processing technology based on FPGA.
