With the development of power electronics, computers, inverters and other electrical appliances which based on power electronics have come into everyday life. While these appliances consume active power, as they are nonlinear loads, they also output harmonics and consume reactive power. And these pollute the power grid. At the same time, appliances which require high power quality such as precision machinery have come into industrial use. The polluted power grid will cause abnormality of these appliances, such as malfunction and broken down. The power quality problem has become a hot spot and has spread all around the world.There are mainly 2 ways to solve the problem: active way, focus on the device itself, it means that to design equipments that do not produce harmonics, do not absorb reactive power while it is also symmetric; passive way, which means to add compensation equipment outside, for example, to introduce LC filters or active power filters (APF) in power system. The latter way is more feasible at this stage.This thesis aims at the designing and application of shunt APF, it decides the architecture and control method of the proposed APF. The main circuit and the control circuit are developed and the specifications of the components are identified. A new programming method is applied to develop system software. The prior work is done and simulation is done to analyze the effect of the proposed APF.The thesis investigated the current detecting method, current tracing method, .Voltage control method of DC-side and the specifications of the DC-side capacitor. The parameters of DC-side voltage, DC-side capacitance and the output reactor are decided through theory and simulation. Main circuit, control circuit and data acquiring circuit are made.The method of using MATLAB 7.2 (R2006a) Embedded Target for the TI TMS320C2000 (ETTIC2000) Ver.2.0 and Link for Code Composer Studio Ver.1.5 to construct the model in simulink and produce programming code real-time is applied to make the program for DSP.Simulation model of APF and resistance furnace are developed and simulation of the effect of APF is done.
