With the development of high capacity, ultra-high voltage, large power grid and heterogeneous network, the operation and management of power grid becomes more and more complicated, and it is more important for the power grid to operate safely and steadily. In order to control the emergencies in the shortest time, the relay protection needs an accurate, reliable, fast channel to transmit the signals.Optical protection technology has been used in North China, Central China and South China, but it's not mature enough. There is not a uniform netork performance specification. This paper aims at demonstrating the feasibility of the optical protection technology and bringing forward more effective designing, testing and calculating methods of delay and error performance of SDH network which is used for transmitting relay protective signals. The author took part in one of the State Grid Corporation of China and China Southern Power grid Corporation's projects: "The reasearch on transmitting relay protective signals and safe and automatic signals by Digital channels" in China Electric Power Institute and achieve the following results:· Provide a new delay testing, calculating and designing method of optical protection channel.· Improve the error testing method, and bring out BER as well as the SES threshold of HRX, which differs from the ITU-T standard.· Prove the availability of transmitting relay protective signals with Self-healing network.· Create the simulation module of error performance so that the network planner can get the error parameters directly and quickly. The result of researching indicates that synchronous optical network can be used to transmit relay protective singnals if it is designed properly.
