With the development of electric power network, the protective relaying signals demand for better channels. The power optical fiber communication network which can make the best use of power line resources, transport on the safe side, and resist electromagnetic interference, will be a preferred type of channels to transport relaying protective signals. The technology of protective relaying signals over optical fiber channels is lack of testing and engineering standards. In this paper, we make a study of whether the performances of fiber channel can meet the demands of reliability and real time or not, advance the measurements and performance threshold applied for fiber channel with protective relaying information.At the beginning of this paper, considering the significance of protective relaying information in power system and the basic requests of the protective relaying channels, we analyze the applications and development trends of protective channels, including pilot wire channel, power line carrier over the transmission line, microwave channel and optical fiber communications system. Since the application of protective relaying signals through fiber channels is short of time and experiences, the technology has not been grown up and the majority of fiber protective channels are in dedicated mode. Therefore, it's necessary to investigate the transmission performances of power fiber communication network with protective relaying signals deeply.Several laboratory studies have been conducted to determine the fiber channel performances in this paper, with the use of optical communication equipments and protective relaying devices. The contents are as follows: the first, channel performances of optical fiber network with protective relaying signals were being measured systemically, that have never been carried out before. The impacts of fiber channel characters on protective relaying signals were studied; the second, error bit rate of fiber protective channel was indicated definitely and proved to be rational by laboratory measurements and calculation; the third, the impacts of jitter and wander on protective relaying information were investigated in particular, and some conclusions about jitter and wander were drawn out; the forth, the transmission delays of different ports, net elements, linear links and network in ring topology were tested in detail and the effects of automatic protective switch time on the protective relaying signals transmission were researched; the fifth, software which can calculate the transmission quality and transmission delay for optical fiber channel with protective relaying information has been compiled, in order to supply references to constructions of protective relaying channels and designs for a new power fiber communication network.This paper elicits measurements and performance threshold applied for fiber channel with protective relaying information, suggests that the number of network elements should be limited to guarantee transmission delay meet the demands in any case, and suggests that we'd better use 2Mb/s interface of terminal unit to transmit protective signals, with the purpose of reducing the factors of error bit and transmission delay.
