Highly precise navigation has been developed rapidly and used widely. It has reached almost every field of national economy and every corner of people's daily lives. GPS positioning and navigation have been well used in vehicle navigation and the technology has been rather mature. In addition, GSM/GPRS network can provide positioning service as well. However, although GPS can provide worldwide real-time positioning service, the fatal shortcoming is that the positioning precision can be reduced sharply owing to the weak satellite signal which is blocked by buildings and trees etc. Fortunately, GSM/GPRS network can work and provide positioning service can transmit the position messages to remote users or servers.Based on the above analysis, this dissertation presents a new kind of positioning and navigation system that can integrate the GPS and GSM/GPRS technology. The new system incorporates the advantages of GPS and GSM/GPRS positioning technologies and the performance is improved highly. The contributions in this dissertation are as follows.1. Design and implementation of the tracking terminal integrating GPS with GSM positioning technology. The tracking terminal incorporates the advantages of GPS and GSM/GPRS and gets positioning information indoors and outdoors. The positioning area can be enlarged to buildings, caves and avenues. Additionally the tracking terminal can transmit messages through both SMS (Short Message Service) and GPRS, and save cost through GPRS.2. Presenting a highly precise and reliable control center of the positioning system. The control center supports the SMS and GPRS to receive and transmit messages. It also has interfaces to other software platforms (GIS, Electronic Maps etc.) and friendly user interfaces. Meanwhile, the control center can provide multiple and rich additional services cooperating with other service providers (weather report, resort introduction, restaurant and entertainment suggestion etc).3. Research on the solutions to improve the positioning precision and to reduce the"blind areas"where there is no GPS signals. The main solutions include the improvement of transforming of latitude and longitude to legible position message and integrating multiple positioning systems, such as INS (Inertial Navigation System), GLONASS by Russia, GALILEO by Europe and"Beidou II"by China. The testing results of the positioning system based on GSM/GPRS and GPS demonstrate that our new navigation system's performance is much better than those with single positioning technology and the positioning area can be enlarged to indoors!...
