With the rapid development of the computer network and the database technology, their combination becomes more and more tightly. How to develop the efficient, stable, secure and maintainable Web database application system using Web database as its data source becomes the important research field of Web applications. And, with the claim for enterprise informationization, it becomes the trend and most important aspect that developing the management information system (MIS) based on Web using database and network technology.The basic database access interfaces, such as ODBC, DAO/RDO based on ODBC, JDBC, OLE DB and ADO appeared in different period, are widely used even till now. The common technology to access Web database, as CGI, ASP, PHP, JSP, is also used in many systems. Microsoft.NET brings about a revolution of the software technology, in which the ASP.NET technology is a brand new Web programming model. As well, the ADO.NET is used as its data access model, which is able to establish N-tiers database applications over Intranet/Internet more rapidly and efficiently.This article begins with the basic framework and some key characters of Microsoft.NET. After analyzing some basic database access interfaces and common Web database application solutions, it contains detailed analyses to the data access service in the .NET environment—ADO.NET. Then, the focus is put on the performance optimization and security of Web database applications. And, together with the web application service ASP.NET and SQL Server 2000, they are applied in "Chengdu Railway Station Information Technology Management System (ITMS)". ITMS implements the establishment and application of the railway informationization over network. After the trial, ITMS decreases the operation cost and increases the efficiency of management. Also, the discussion of the topic and the implentation of ITMS provide a reference for the typical Web database management system based on Web platform.
