A survey conducted from 1992 to 1995 shows that 57.6% of Chinese were infected with hepatitis B and 9.75% were hepatitis B carriers, that is to say, 690 million Chinese were ever infected with the disease and 120 million are life-long carriers. According to experts estimate, China now has 20 million chronicle hepatitis B patients.The 10% rate has severely affected people's health and their life span. Some 100 billion yuan of losses each year incurred. Such disease has brought about a lot of burdens for patients, their families and society. In the meanwhile, a series of social problems also popped up. The disease has become one of China's most prominent pubic health issues.In the information society, mass media undertakes the task of transmitting basic knowledge and prevention measures about hepatitis B. No matter for an individual or a society, health related information transmitted by mass media will affect the public' s perception about hepatitis B. Mass media also plays very important role in setting up hepatitis B patients' images in audience' s minds and audience' s perception about the disease as well their behavior alternation after learning the disease.The paper selected People's Daily, South Weekend and Yangcheng Evening News, China's three major and renowned newspapers as research targets and tries to figure out the three newspapers news coverage on hepatitis B patients from June, 2000 to June 2005. The paper also explores the three newspapers' role in health communication and analyzes the characters and focuses on such reports. Finally, the paper pointed out the problems the three newspapers have in reporting such disease and patients and measures for solving those problems.The paper studied news resources and way of reporting hepatitis B by adopting content analysis. The third part of the paper uses text analysis to analyze the three newspapers' report effects in the disease reports, SPSS11.5 is also used in analyzing the samples.
